No More Back Pain: Kerala Professor Invents 360° Fruit Plucker

Say Goodbye to Back Pain: The Genius 360-Degree Fruit Plucker Invented by a Kerala Professor

If you have ever tried to pluck a heavy fruit like a jackfruit or a bunch of mangoes from a tall tree in your backyard, you know the struggle.

Holding a heavy bamboo pole over your head for minutes at a time puts immense, painful strain on your arms, shoulders, and back. Worse yet, there is always the dangerous gamble of a heavy fruit falling directly onto your head.

Frustrated by this exact painful experience while tending to the jackfruit trees in his own backyard, Dr. A M Ranjith, a former professor at Kerala Agricultural University, decided enough was enough. Instead of buying another standard, rigid picker, he used his academic background to engineer a patented, strain-free fruit plucking device that balances itself using simple physics.

The Seed of the Idea

The breakthrough came from pure frustration. Dr. Ranjith repeatedly injured himself when harvesting large jackfruits. "There have been times when my attempts to pluck the fruit led to it falling on my head," he shared, noting that a colleague had even sustained severe bruises from a falling jackfruit.

Beyond the falling hazard, traditional harvesting poles force the user to support the entire leverage weight of the stick directly on their back and shoulders, which completely ruins accuracy. Dr. Ranjith set out to design an affordable tool that eliminated this physical stress—something so lightweight and well-balanced that even a small child could use it comfortably without aches or fear.

Technical Features: The Power of the Dynamic Fulcrum

Rather than relying on human muscle to hold up and steer the harvesting pole, Dr. Ranjith's patented device relies on the physics of a dynamic fulcrum.

  • 360-Degree Rotation: The tool features a unique rotational joint that allows the harvesting hook to spin a full 360 degrees effortlessly. This means you can twist fruits off branches from any angle without awkwardly twisting your body.

  • Weight Distribution: The mechanical fulcrum balances the pole at a precise gravity point. Instead of the weight crashing down onto your shoulders, the device absorbs the leverage pressure, making the pole feel virtually weightless in your hands.

  • Universal Attachment: It is designed as a compact, modular unit that can be easily attached to almost any standard local pole or stick via a secure hook mechanism.

A Multi-Purpose Safety Lifesaver

While Dr. Ranjith initially designed the tool to save his back during harvest season, the dynamic fulcrum design makes it highly versatile. According to the inventor, the tool's adaptability stretches far beyond the farm:

  • Fire Departments: Can be modified to attach hoses or tools to douse fires in high-altitude, hard-to-reach locations.

  • Disaster Management: The lightweight, extended leverage makes it an effective tool for emergency rescue teams trying to reach and save someone who is drowning.

  • General Gardening: Perfect for safely pruning branches or removing high-altitude hazards without needing a ladder.

Cost-Effective and Accessible Innovation

Dr. Ranjith's main goal was to keep the device highly accessible to common farmers and backyard gardeners.

If manufactured strictly for fruit plucking, the device costs a modest ₹500 to ₹1,000 to produce, and the price drops even lower if manufactured on a large commercial scale. However, Dr. Ranjith warns DIY innovators to be cautious: the pole and device should always be constructed using non-conductor materials (like reinforced fiberglass or treated wood) to ensure users are completely protected from accidental electrocution if the pole brushes against overhead rural power lines.
