ICL Opens Advanced Water-Soluble NPK Fertilizer Plant in Maharashtra

The global supply chain for agricultural inputs has been anything but predictable lately. Between geopolitical tensions and shipping bottlenecks in critical corridors like the Strait of Hormuz, countries that rely heavily on imports have faced a massive challenge in keeping their fields nourished.

Recognizing this, Israel-based global specialty minerals leader ICL Group (formerly Israel Chemicals Ltd) took a massive stride toward localizing production by officially inaugurating its brand-new, state-of-the-art Water-Soluble NPK Fertilizer Manufacturing Plant in Maharashtra, India.

Spanning 28,000 square meters (roughly seven acres), this advanced facility isn't just an expansion of ICL’s footprint—it is a timely safeguard for Indian food security and a big win for the government's "Make in India" vision.

The Strategic Shift: Solving India’s 90% Import Problem

India is incredibly self-reliant when it comes to standard, soil-applied traditional fertilizers like bulk urea. However, when it comes to specialty Water-Soluble Fertilizers (WSFs), the story changes drastically.

Before this plant's opening, India was forced to import nearly 90% of its water-soluble fertilizer requirements. Because WSFs dissolve completely in water, they are a premium resource used primarily in drip irrigation (fertigation) and direct foliar spraying (spraying directly onto leaves). They are massively efficient, but being heavily reliant on global trade meant Indian farmers were highly vulnerable to price spikes and delayed shipments.

By building this facility directly in Maharashtra—one of India’s largest and most progressive agricultural markets—ICL is replicating its world-class Israeli production model right on Indian soil.

Why Water-Soluble NPKs are a Game Changer for Farmers

Traditional fertilizers are broadcast (scattered) across the soil, where a massive amount of the nutrients are lost to evaporation or washed away by rains. Water-soluble NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium) blends change the game entirely.

• Precision Delivery: Applied straight through drip lines, nutrients go directly to the plant's root zone.

• Higher Yields, Less Waste: Because the plant absorbs nearly 100% of the dissolved nutrients, farmers use less raw fertilizer while seeing vastly superior crop quality.

• Targeted Growth: Different ratios of N-P-K can be deployed depending on the crop's lifecycle (e.g., higher phosphorus for root development or higher potassium for fruit sizing).

The Maharashtra unit will manufacture the exact same high-quality, high-concentration specialty lines—like ICL’s premium PeaK and Fertiflow ranges—that were previously exported all the way from Israel.

Scale, Timeline, and Future Impact

ICL has been a trusted partner to Indian agriculture for over three decades, generating roughly $250 million in annual revenues from the region. Localizing the manufacturing process is the natural next step in scaling up.

The company plans to ramp up production gradually, aiming for a projected capacity of 30,000 tons by 2029.
